Mid Season Update - Aid The Boss

Mid Season Update

If you’ve been following Aid The Boss, you will know that I have recently decided to start blogging about my own FM career. My first post was mostly information on how I will manage the club, the tactic’s I will be playing, and the transfers I made, you can read this post here.

Champions League

I got put in a group with Roma, Salzburg, and Rangers, and although some of these teams can prove to be difficult, I breezed the group with 5 wins and a draw! I’ve got drawn against Dutch side FC Twente in the first knockout, so I’m confident I can progress even further!

League Cup

I got dumped out in the 3rd round by arch-rivals Chelsea, was a shame to lose but as all Arsenal fans say, “it’s only the carling cup”

FA Cup

I got drawn against Spurs in the 4th round, and after a 1-1 draw at WHL, I’m confident we can go through in the replay at Emirates!

So, I’m just over halfway through my first season at Arsenal, and I’m currently sitting top of the premiership, and unbeaten in 23 games. Here is the current league table (Click to enlarge):

As you can see by the screenshot, it’s extremely tight between me and Chelsea at the top of the league, and a bad run or a couple of injuries could see us slip down the table. You lot are probably shocked at the fact Sunderland sit at 6th like I am (No offence Sunderland fans) but anything can happen in Football.

I got off to a pretty average start, in my first games I won 5 and drew 2, all against weaker opposition.  I am going to need to make some changes to my tactic, as all my draws come from weaker opposition. This is probably down to the fact they play very defensively, and hit me on the counter attack as my defence isn’t the strongest, so I definately need to make some amendments if I want to prevent dropping any more points. What has kept me at the top are my wins against the team’s around me. Here are two great games on my behalf: (click to enlarge)

Transfer Analysis

Neymar – In my first blog post, a lot of you questioned the combination of Van Persie and Neymar, but in the first few games it was working wonderfully! He bagged 7 goals in his first 10 games, with 5 assists, whilst Van Persie was in double figures. However, a broken leg in October put him out for 3 months which was a big blow, and he should be back in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully he will carry on where he left off!

Diego Benaglio –  There isn’t a lot I can say about Benaglio, however he has been very solid in goal for us, and had tallied up 15 clean sheets in 23 games, there isn’t much more I can ask from a keeper! He is still young so like Neymar, I hope for man great seasons with him at the club

Player Information

  • Top Goalscorer – Van Persie (26)
  • Most Assists – Arshavin (15)
  • Man of the Match – Van Persie (8)
  • Highest Average Rating – Van Persie (7.72)

As you can see from the stats, Van Persie has been on fire for me, and if it wasn’t for him I definately would be nowhere near the top, so fingers crossed he doesn’t pick up an injury like Neymar. Theo Walcott filled in for Neymar, and has bagged an impressive 10 goals in 19 games so I can’t argue with that!

My next update will be near the end of the season where the final few games are left to play, so you can see how  I’m doing in all competitions. If you would like to know anything else about this save or how certain players are developing etc, post a comment and I will be sure to reply.

Also, if anybody has any tips on my tactics for playing weaker opposition, please share them in the comments!!

In general, vs weaker sides, I stick to Balanced-Attacking mentality or Balanced-Counter, depending on their strategy. Vs. 4-5-1, 4-4-1-1 and 4-1-4-1, in general I stick to Balanced-Counter, because my midfield gets overrun easly (I stick with 4-4-2 pretty much always). Vs. 4-4-2, 5-3-2 and 3-5-2 Attacking seems to stick the opposition into its own half, which is a slight problem because I become vunerable to counter-attacks, so I need fast CDs and very defensive Ball-Winning Midfielder. Works thou. In an early save with Blackburn Rovers, I was loosing only points vs. “The Big Four”, which in my case was Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea.
BTW, when you’re using Neymar + van Persie, what instructions do you use for them ? It’s an interesting duo, to say the least. I’m huge fan of the “Big man – small man” attack pair and that just doesn’t seems to work in my head.
GL in the second half of your season 😉

Thanks for the detailed comment. I will try to use some of your ideas in my tactics for weaker opposition, hopefully it will stop me dropping lots of points!

I’m using Van Persie as an advanced forward, and Neymar as a poacher. I will admit, I don’t know a great deal about the tactics side of things of FM, but it seems to be working ok for me. Maybe with a different combination it would work better who knows, I will have to wait until the end of the season 😀

Don’t tweak the winning combo if it does the trick for ya 😉
It’s actually the middle of the park where games vs. lower clubs are being lost. Sometimes, they’re just more aggressive then your side.
I’ve been experimenting with the MCs in my team lineup, and from what I’ve discovered, the “obvious” BWM (D) and Adv. Playmaker (S), doesn’t always provide the results.
Given your team, BWM (S) on A. Song, with manually reduced mentality should work better. And with Cecs, you might wanna go DLP with a bit of increased mentality, attempts on long shots and forward runs. Something like “Semi-Adv. Playmaker & Box-to-box”, but without the need of 20 Stamina (a bit less closing down naturally).
Still thou, best results seems to be 4-5-1 vs. weaker sides, with Anchor Man as DM, MCl – Box-to-box and MCr BWM (S).
I’ve been playing FM since CM 98-99 and tactically, I think I’ve been improving since then onwards ever slightly.

  • Lol… what a waste of time…. dont u guys have life? pathetic… you cant never be a real manager? FTW

    • Lolz@youhavenolife?

“what a waste of time” & “pathetic” says the guy writing comments on an internet blog he obviously has no interest in just to slag others off.
Why don’t you go and crack one off to a video of your mum on youpron! 🙂

    • YOU have no life.

Wow. I think you’re a complete addict with no life. What you’re saying is what every no-lifer says to make them feel better. Also stop trolling on random websites and ruining everything for people who want to learn, comment, and not take out their anger at having nothing on people who did nothing to you. WTF?!

      • lolz at you.

what you said is rly true.

  • Nyxelin

Wow. Who has no life? I play FM and personally love it, and you probably spend your time trolling on forums like this. I bet that’s a great life to you. I agree with the post above… plus youre the pathetic one. You probably have no life whatsoever, no social life, no job, no love life, and take it out on people who actually try to live out our lifes.

    • pathetic answer as usual… i bet u guys stay in front of pc and have no friends in REALITY

  • Nyxelin

I have a lot of friends and oppourtunities in life and I am a fan of arsenal and soccer, which is why I play it. I enjoy this website and so do many other people. Football manager is a great game and I am sorry if the comment was felt like that by other people reading, but the person saying “you have no life, you have no life” above me obviously doesn’t have one except for sittin behind a computer and trying to make people’s lives bad. He is a childish person and I see that a lot when I visit forums. I am not saying I did not say he was pathetic, because he is. The point of my comment was simply to say this and also… Who are you to say someone has no friends when you made that comment?! And to the person who started this, can you be a real manager? I don’t think so. I don’t want to become a manager and I would like to study economics. Don’t listen to me if you don’t want to.

  • FM.

i think the guy above me is right. it’s a great guide to fm and has a lot of work and effort put into it buy a true fan and instead of fcking trolling on random websites why don’t you respect that you idiots. I think the troll who started this didn’t even play football manager, ever. If youre just here to troll just gtfo! I am sorry if some of this was offensive but the trolls deserve it and please keep commenting dan’s management of Arsenal. Thank You Dan.

I play as newcastle almost all the time, other than a few saves i have with teams like valencia and roma. I dont like using teams that are “guaranteed” to win as they are just too easy if you know the tactics well.
Good mid field tactics are, IMO, the key in football manager, always have been. As long as you have a solid defence, and a half decent striker to go with them, your midfielders will win you the league.
In terms of dropping points, im guessing you still have diaby or song? Neither of them are game changes but they can both plug the gap and stop you from conceding goals against smaller clubs.
Also, if you have around 6 mill to spare i would recommend steven defour from standard liege. Probably the best mental stats of any 22 year old on the game and his other stats go through the roof with regular football.
